About Us
South County Youth Lacrosse (“SCYL”) is a non-profit recreational sports league for girls and boys ages 6 to 14 from South County, consisting of South Kingstown, Narragansett, Kingston, Wakefield, South Saunderstown, Charlestown, Westerly, and all points south to the Connecticut border. SCYL is committed to making lacrosse available to any youth who is interested in trying the sport and encourages new players of all ages to pick up a stick and give the “fastest game on two feet” a try. SCYL embraces the teaching philosophy of the Positive Coaching Alliance and the focus is on skill development and allowing friends to play together in a relaxing but challenging environment. Our Coaches recognize that although winning is important, teaching life lessons is the most important goal in youth lacrosse. We strive to "Honor the Game", and redefine "winner" not by reference to the final count on the scorebaord but by how well we teach our children to give it their best effort, and by working to refill their "emotional tank".
The SCYL teams play in a statewide league with ten other youth leagues from across the state on Saturday mornings, starting the first week of April and ending the first part of June. The SCYL teams practice twice a week in the Spring season. The information flyer listed above provides details above registering for the Spring season.
After the Spring season ends, SCYL sends several teams to the annual Camel Jam lacrosse tournament in mid-June held at Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. Following that tournament, SCYL then conducts a weeklong morning lacrosse camp the first week of August at the University of Rhode Island (“URI”) in cooperation with the URI Mens’ Lacrosse team and South Kingstown High School lacrosse team. In the fall, SCYL manages the Narragansett Bay Fall Lacrosse league; organizing Saturday afternoon games for U-11, U-13 and U-15 players (no practices) and also conducts a U-9 clinic during the week. Following the fall league, SCYL sends competitive teams to the annual Brown Lacrosse tournament held the weekend before Thanksgiving (a/k/a “Bruno Turkey Shoot”). In the winter, SCYL runs an indoor clinic for the first six Sundays of the year (boys at the Narragansett High School and girls at Broad Rock Middle School). The winter clinic is a great opportunity for new players to get exposed to the game before the spring season starts or for returning players to tune up before the season starts. The information flyer listed above provides details about registering for the boys' winter clinic. Details about the girls' winter clinic will be posted shortly.
No matter what your level of skill or interest in Lacrosse, we offer a program that hopefully meets your needs and your schedule. We welcome any questions or inquiries and any new volunteers who wish to get involved in providing our children with the opportunity to play a game that equals no other sport.
Play On!

Volunteers Needed
The SCYL coaches come from the ranks of parents who have sons and daughters playing on the teams and as those sons and daughters grow and move up and out of the age group for the program the parent coaches also move on. The continued success of any youth athletic program is dependent upon parents of new or existing players stepping forward to fill the coaching needs for the program.
Prior lacrosse experience is not needed to be a successful youth lacrosse coach. At these age groups, the key to success does not lie in having any experience in the sport. Rather, those parents who are successful simply possess the following skills:
-
The desire to create the opportunity for their children, and other children in the community, to play sports
-
Who have an aptitude and talent in organizing practices (what we like to refer to as the skill set for “herding the cats?
-
Who can encourage and teach children in a supportive and nurturing manner.
At the bottom of that list, any prior knowledge or experience with Lacrosse is an added plus, but by no means is a requirement to be a successful youth lacrosse coach.
To allay any anxieties that may prevent any interested parents from taking the plunge, the Rhode Island Lacrosse Association will host a US Lacrosse Level I certification clinic prior to the season start for those new (and experienced) coaches who are interested that will provide all the basic knowledge of the game and fundamental skills that you need to know in order to coach youth lacrosse.
So please consider volunteering your services either as a coach, assistant or team parent. Any time you can give in any capacity will help in ensuring that the SCYL program continues to be a successful youth program for our children to enjoy for years to come.

SCYL Coaches Complete US Lacrosse Level I Certification Clinic
In March, 2008, the Rhode Island Lacrosse Association sponsored the first ever US Lacrosse Level I coaching certification clinic in Rhode Island. Of the 80 plus coaches who attended from the 10 youth programs in Rhode Island, SCYL had the highest number of coaches attending, which is reflective of the programs spirit and determination to provide the best coaches possible for our children. These SCYL coaches have gone through an intense all day clinic, plus a half day workshop presented by the Positive Coaching Alliance, and have taken a written exam in order to obtain their Level I coaching certification from US Lacrosse, the national governing body for youth lacrosse in the United States.
Coaches / Volunteers
All coaches and volunteers must be registered and have an application on file with SCYL. Please fill out the application form and mail it to the address provided in the application.
SCYL Honors Lisa WalshAn achievement award was presented to Lisa Walsh, acknowledging her hard work and dedication to SCYL and the sport of lacrosse. Lisa, was Girl's Program Director of SCYL and ran the girls league for the past six years. She and her husband, Rick, have been instrumental to the success of SCYL. Rich stepped down as Program Director this past season. Over the past several years Lisa, and her husband, have spent countless hours organizing, coaching, mentoring and running SCYL. Lisa and Rick have two children. Their son Rob, an all-american in high school lacrosse, will be a sophomore at Connecticut College in the fall. Their daughter Abby is a Junior at Prout and plays on the women's varsity team that won the 2007 state championship.
Thank-You
South County Youth Lacrosse wishes to thank Dicks Sporting Goods for their support of the program this year. Through the Youth Sports Program, each coach received a team package that included two dozen lacrosse balls, scrimmage vests, cones, a whiteboard and an equipment bag. Youth players are also encouraged to obtain valuable savings coupons from the coaching staff. Congratulations to Dicks for their efforts in growing the sport in South County!
